ABOUT US.

ABOUT US.

First a stable… now a championship course.

In the mid-1970s, real estate developer and WWII veteran Chris Bargas Sr. acquired the land with a vision: to create a world-class public golf destination that embraced the natural beauty of New England. After three years of thoughtful design and development, Whitney Farms Golf Course opened in 1982 with an 18-hole championship layout designed by renowned architect Hal C. Purdy. Built by Bargas himself, the course made full use of the area’s ponds, wildlife, and rolling views — blending challenge and charm in every round. The property was originally used as a horse stable and dairy farm. Remnants of that history remain visible, including the stone barn facade at the clubhouse entrance.

Today, the club has grown into a vibrant, family-owned facility, renamed in 2024 by James Bargas to honor his father’s legacy. With over 40,000 rounds played annually, the course has become a cornerstone of the local community and a destination for golfers of all skill levels.

Highlights include:

  • 6534 yards from the championship tees

  • Slope ratings ranging from 127 to 134

  • A full-service Pro Shop and welcoming Sand Trap Bar & Grill

  • Year-round tee times, well-maintained fairways, and carts always available

  • An active Men’s and Ladies Club, including a thriving women’s 3-hole league

  • Youth programming, PGA Jr. League, and strong partnerships with local schools

  • A Course Record of 63

    • Set from the championship tees by our very own PGA Professional, Billy Street, on July 5, 2023

Over the years, the club has earned high praise and accolades from Golf Digest, Connecticut Magazine, Connecticut Golf Magazine, and more. In 2025, the club was honored with the Walter Lowell Public Golf Course Distinguished Service Award by the Connecticut Section PGA — a testament to its dedication to accessibility, service, and the future of the game.
